Chapter 1: On the Trail of the Past
In his worst nightmares, Ethan never thought he’d be stuck sorting through his grandpa’s old stuff after all these years. But here he was, in an old English house near Oxford, in his grandpa’s dusty study. The very room where, as a kid, he’d sit wide-eyed, soaking up his grandpa’s thrilling and mystical stories. His grandpa had been a famous archaeologist and quite the adventurer. Inspired by him, Ethan had studied archaeology and was supposed to be at an epic dig site in the Middle East.
But now, he was here - he was stuck in this super old, creepy house, buried under piles of dusty papers.
This is Ethan, and his adventure is about to begin.
With a mix of dread and curiosity, Ethan stared at the piles of documents, books, letters, and bills. He had to sift through all of it and maybe even respond to some. “This is
gonna take forever,” he thought, frustrated. His eyes roamed the dusty room until something bizarre caught his attention: strange symbols next to the numbers on the old grandfather clock! Why hadn’t he noticed this before? Had these symbols always been there? He’d seen them somewhere before. Was it in one of Professor Thompson’s lectures at Oxford? Why were there only seven symbols? And why not under all the numbers?
Ethan’s heart raced as he approached the clock, his mind buzzing with possibilities. Was this a puzzle left by his adventurous grandpa? The thrill of unraveling a mystery was too tempting to resist. With each click of the clock, his excitement grew, pulling him deeper into the enigma.
Ethan wiped the dust off the clock face and, to his astonishment, discovered that the dial could be moved. He turned it so that the first symbol aligned with twelve o'clock and heard a loud click. He turned it further until the second symbol was at twelve o'clock and heard another click. After the seventh turn, the clock door suddenly swung open. Curiously, Ethan peered inside. What he saw made him even more intrigued.
An old book drew him like a magnet. On the cover was an embossed relief that Ethan recognized from his childhood. It was the imprint of the amulet his father had given him many years ago. Ethan always carried this amulet with him. In disbelief, he took the amulet from around his neck and placed it on the relief: The two items fit together perfectly. More than that, the book seemed to magically attract the amulet. Ethan tried to separate them. Suddenly, the amulet began to glow and...
Ethan, along with the book and the amulet, was pulled into a beam of light, literally sucked in. The world around him disappeared as he lost consciousness.
