Chapter 3: The Secret Chamber
Ethan's gaze wandered over the weathered stone walls, which seemed to whisper tales from a long-forgotten time.
And then he saw it: the relief on the back of his grandfather's notebook. It matched the facade in front of him down to the smallest detail. A shiver ran down his spine. He had been right. This place was more than just an old ruin. It was a key to a secret that had been hidden for centuries.
Carefully, he pulled the notebook from his pocket and flipped to the page with the relief. Next to the drawing, his grandfather had written, "The key lies within." Ethan didn't know exactly what that meant, but he was determined to find out.
He circled the temple, searching for an entrance. After some time, he discovered a small, inconspicuous door set into the wall. With trembling hands, he pushed it open. Inside, it was pitch dark. Ethan pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight. The beam of light fell on a spiral staircase leading downward.
Without hesitation, Ethan descended the steps. The deeper he went, the damper and colder it became. Finally, he reached a large, circular chamber. In the center of the room stood a stone pedestal, on which rested a peculiar object: a bronze cylinder composed of six rotating rings and a fixed, also rotating, seventh ring. The rings were engraved with mystical symbols, each representing one of the seven palaces of the Kabbalah.
Ethan recognized the cylinder immediately. He had seen it as a mystical and enigmatic drawing on the wall in his grandfather's study. Beside the cylinder lay a ring that fit perfectly into a slot at the top of the cylinder. In his mind, the puzzle pieces slowly came together. The amulet, the notebook, the cylinder, and the ring—they were all part of a greater whole.
He took the ring and inserted it into the slot. The moment the ring clicked into place, Ethan began to rotate the rings of the cylinder, aligning the seven palaces of the Kabbalah. As he positioned the last ring, an object sprang from the center of the cylinder—a mysterious key.
Suddenly, the floor beneath Ethan's feet vibrated, and the air grew cooler. An invisible door opened in the wall. Beyond it lay a small chamber filled with golden treasures and ancient scrolls. But the most intriguing feature was a large, round disk embedded in the wall. The same symbols on the cylinder adorned the disk.
And in the center... Ethan could hardly believe it. There was another septagram relief, like the one on the notebook that had been damaged during the time travel to the archaeological excavation.
Puzzle upon puzzle. Was this the way back? But he wasn't ready yet. There was still so much to discover here. Or what else would happen to him? Yet an invisible force drew him to the relief.
Ethan placed his amulet into the recess of the relief on the wall. Suddenly, the amulet began to glow and a thundering noise filled the chamber. A brilliant light emanated from the combined objects, and an immense force pulled Ethan towards or even into the wall. He closed his eyes, overwhelmed by the intensity of the light and sound.
And then... Ethan was once again hurled into darkness. But this time, it was different. When he came to, he was no longer in the chamber. Instead, he found himself in a completely foreign environment. Above him, the stars twinkled in an unfamiliar constellation, and around him, he heard the rustling of plants and the murmur of a nearby river.
He was somewhere else, in a place he had never seen before. With a pounding heart, he lifted his head and looked around. The amulet and notebook lay firmly in his grasp. What had happened? And what secrets awaited him here?
Ethan lost consciousness.
.... to be continued
